Local Softball Legend, Charles R. Rhoades Sr. 81, of Quarryville died Saturday June 8, 2019 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Lancaster County he was the son of the late George W. and Viola W. Rhoades. He was the husband of the late Shirley (Frank) Rhoades.
He retired from The Buck Company after 45 years of service.
Charles was well known for his fastpitch softball and bowling careers. He was inducted into the Bowling and Softball Hall of Fame. He enjoyed helping others improve their softball and bowling skills.
Mr. Rhoades is survived by three sons, George husband of Rose of Willow Street, Charles Jr. husband of Patricia of Quarryville, Robert (Bob) companion of Sheila Ulmer of Quarryville. He is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Condolences to the family. Charlie was a legend in the softball and bowling community besides being the nicest guy you could find. Charlies was a fierce competitor and a friend of ours.

Our thoughts and prayers for the Rhoades Family. We will miss them both. We always enjoyed our visits with them when we were in PA just sitting at the kitchen table and talking and laughing ????

Joyce and I want to extend our condolences to you. I want you to know how much I respected your dad as a softball player and human being. To me he was always a gentleman. Yes, he was a competitor but he did it politely. Unfortunately for me, I never had an opportunity to umpire him in his prime, and that was for a long time. He was willing to help others succeed even when he was playing against them. He had a phrase for me. “Let him alone and you have a good umpire, complain and you get what you get.” He knew me well on the field. My sympathies.

It’s been a number of years since I last saw Charlie, but I’ve got lots of great memories. From seeing him on his porch in Quarryville, at the Bowling Alley, or playing alongside him on the softball field, always brought a smile to my face.

Charlie was an amazing man. My daughter, Kayla, took pitching lessons from Charlie a few years ago. She thought the world of him. He had her throwing strikes with her eyes closed at her first pitching lesson. I was amazed. He loved helping the girls and watching them play at Garrett Park. We will miss Charlie a lot. Praying for your family in this time of sorrow.

Charlie was a great guy loved bowling with him even though he always won he was a great bowler and amazing softball pitcher always telling jokes just a great guy gonna miss ya paps God bless rest of the family friends prayers sent .

Unfortunately I always played against Charlie. He was an example of an outstanding sportsman. I still say he could’ve hit in the major leagues.

We had many a childhood memories living across the road from one another.
