Marit Dvorak

Marit Dvorak, 54, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2021. Comforted by her husband, Derek Shanahan, and sister Leah Dvorak, she fought a short but spirited battle with cancer.

Born in Bloomington, MN, she and Derek found their way to Lancaster in 1994 to pursue Derek’s teaching career at Millersville University.  An exceptional gardener, she was involved in the local herb guild and brought life and beauty into her home and yard.  Marit was an enthusiastic crafter and knitter, seeing the potential in anything to become something special.  She also enjoyed books and helping with the public library book sales, auctions, the beach, and her cats.

Marit is also survived by her parents, David and JoAnne, siblings Chris and Paul, and nephew David.

The family wishes that any memorials be directed to fighting cancer.

  • I’d like to express my condolences to the family of Marit Dvorak. She was a wonderful friend of when we attended Breck School in Minnesota. My mind is filled with many fond memories of her kind gentle and brilliant spirit. Sending warm thoughts and prayers your way

  • Derek,
Maryellyne and I are so sorry for your loss. We so enjoyed the company of you two. There were always lots of laughs and good times. She will be dearly missed. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

  • Marit was my friend for about 25 years. Sometimes you meet someone who is so special that your life changes forever. Marit was that type of friend. She was the friend I could talk to about anything and she always tried to understand. I have many beautiful items she knitted for me and on one side of her home she had a garden she called, Gerry’s garden because there she put all the plants I would give her. We often went flower shopping for our gardens and every fall we always had something to share with each other. One of the very last gifts I gave her was an elephant ear a few weeks before she passed. We often met in the park and would go for a walk, sharing tips on gardening and sewing. I will miss the hand made items, the walks in the park, the sharing of flowers, but most of all I will miss my friend, Marit. Rest In Peace.

  • Words can not express how sorry I am for your loss. Marit was a long time friend for 24 years. We had many fun times together. She will be truly missed.
