James Elwood Kendig, 83, passed away on August 27, 2026, leaving behind a life built around family, hard work, and an appreciation for the finer things in life.

Born July 26, 1943, James was the oldest of seven children. He attended McCaskey High School before earning his GED while serving in the United States Army.

James married the love of his life, Roseann, in 1965, beginning a marriage that spanned more than 60 years. His devotion began long before they exchanged vows, when he would hitchhike from Lancaster to York just to spend time with her.

A skilled electrician, James worked for Amtrak for 17 years and later spent nine years as the top salesman with United American before retiring. He was a devout Christian and an active member of Hope City Church.

James enjoyed fishing, hunting, long drives, socializing and, perhaps most of all, shopping. He appreciated luxury cars, was always well-dressed and meticulously groomed. James had an eye for detail, right down to the width of a tie and the direction of its stripes.

Over 83 years, James built a life distinctly his own. He worked hard, loved his family, enjoyed good company, took pride in how he presented himself, and rarely settled for anything less than the best. His family will remember not only the milestones of his life, but the countless small characteristics, stories, and memories that made him unmistakably James.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Roseann Kendig; sons, Kam and Kristopher; daughter, Jessica Falcone; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings, Dale Kendig, Bonnie Adams, Steve Kendig, Mike Kendig, Susan Patterson, and Joel Kendig.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, at Hope City Church, 4696 Breezyview Road, Lancaster. A reception will follow at the American Legion in Marietta.
