Sarah Addicott

December 7, 1937 — August 28, 2024

Sarah “Sally” Ann Addicott, 86, passed away peacefully with her son present on August 28, at Neffsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Home. She was born on December 7, 1937, in Lancaster, PA, to Harold and Ann Ebersole. She is survived by her son, Leslie, grandson, Ethan, a younger brother, David Ebersole (Freidlinde Ebersole) of Brethren Village, two nephews and two great nephews.

Sally graduated from McCaskey High School in 1955, and Juniata College in 1959, with a BA in Education. She began her teaching career at Rothsville Elementary School, where she had several Amish children in her classes. In 1963, she moved to Pasadena, California, and took a kindergarten teaching position with the El Monte School District in East Los Angeles, a stark contrast to Rothsville. Sally married James W. Addicott in 1970, and in 1973, gave birth to her only son, Leslie. In 1978, she moved with her son to Lancaster, PA, where she was hired as the Executive Director of the Lancaster Day Care Center on S. Queen Street (now the Lancaster Early Education Center), where she modernized the building and expanded the services to include infant care. She obtained her MS in Education from Temple University in 1982. In 1992, Sally moved to Southport Island, Maine, where she was hired by the Boothbay Region School District as an Elementary Special Education Teacher. She retired in 2004, and returned to Lancaster to be closer to family.

Sally was a devout Episcopalian and offered her early education expertise to build Sunday school curriculums at churches in Boothbay Harbor and in Camden, Maine. She was the wedding coordinator for All Saints-By-The-Sea, a summer chapel on Southport Island, in the late 1990s. She loved her Labrador Retrievers, Penn State football, and spending time with her grandson most of all. She was an avid reader of all kinds of books, particularly romance novels that involved Scottish rogues and skeptical maidens in her later years.

She will be remembered for her profound love and concern for children, her service to the church, and her persistent love for those closest to her. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Lancaster, PA, at 2pm on Sunday, October 20. Please send flowers to the Rosemont unit at Neffsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Home and any donations to the Lancaster Early Education Center.
