Shelby Elizabeth Chunko

I am very sorry for your loss. Shelby and I worked together at Millersville University in the late 1980s. We stayed in touch since those days. Shelby’s love of nature and animals and her droll view of the human scene were priceless. She could always make me belly laugh. I will remember her fondly as long as I live. Much peace to her and her family.

Hi Nancy, Albert here in Dover, NH. I met Shelby in the summer 1965 in Ogunquit, Me. and had reconnected with her in 2004. That unfortunately did not work out as planned. As you are her friend accept my condolences on her passing.

I am so sorry to hear of Shelby’s passing. In our younger years, we were really close. Shelby was unique, and my memories are great! Condolences to Tom and his family.

I have been friends with Shelby since we worked together in State College over 40 years ago. We fell out of touch several times, but had reconnected a few years ago and I was supposed to visit her in May of 2020. But then Covid hit and I still haven’t gotten to Pennsylvania – I live in Florida. I have been trying to get in touch with Shelby for months now, by email, phone and mail. Today is Shelby’s birthday and, when I attempted to call, I was automatically disconnected. So I reluctantly Googled Obituaries in Lancaster and this came up. I loved Shelby and she was a very good friend to me. We had many, many long conversations over the years, and a few memorable visits, and I have a hatbox full of letters that she wrote to me. I am so deeply sad that we were unable to see each other in person. She wanted to take me down to The Brandywine River Museum when I came up to visit. We both loved Andrew Wyeth and the Museum so much. My deepest condolences to the children of her brother and to her other friends. I’m sure she was the greatest aunt and friend to all of you, as she was to me.

My sincere condolences for Shelby’s passing. I sent her a Christmas card and haven’t hear from her in awhile so I searched her name on Google and found this. I am her cousin, Lori Chunko, daughter of Nick And Fran Chunko. Living on the West coast, I don’t know that I ever met her in person (I may have met her once when I visited PA with my parents way back in the late 70’s) but we did shared emails and Christmas cards. She was a very unique woman and I loved her spirit.

My name is Dawn Cunko, and I am Shelby’s cousin. We spent long hours together talking of everything from our shared love of the outdoors and gardening to animals to music (her beloved Bee-Gees!) Shelby was a very unique, intelligent, and fiercely independent woman, and I treasured our time together. I will miss her greatly. “Cosmos mariner, destination unknown . . “

I am so very sorry to learn of Shelby’s death. We worked together in the ’90s on the Forest Stewardship Program, where we spent weekends with forest landowners interested in learning more about their woods and sharing it with others. She cared deeply about the natural world, and fought hard to save the woods near her home in State College from development. We haven’t seen one another in years but have kept in touch with Christmas cards. I had no idea she was so ill and wish I had been in contact with her more recently.

I’m so sorry to hear of Shelby’s passing. She and my mother Barbara Roberts were friends from an early age. My mother has also passed. I’d like to think they’re together again.
